Childhood sweethearts Michelle and Malcolm, who recently celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary, began their fostering journey with the intention of providing respite for a specific child. Michelle worked as a Senior Learning Support Assistant in a school for children with Additional Learning Needs and knew a family who had been looking for respite for several years. This spurred their decision to apply to become local authority foster carers.
However, during their assessment, Michelle made the decision to give up work and become a full-time foster carer. She says. “We now have the privilege of providing full-time care for a little boy and respite for a young adult, both with additional needs. Both have settled really well into our family and bring lots of fun and laughter into our home. A foster carer does not need to commit to caring full-time to make a huge, positive difference in a child’s life. We would encourage anyone thinking about fostering to take the first step on what will be a very rewarding journey.”
